Main Water Line Repair and Replacement in the Treasure Valley

The main water service line runs from the meter at the street to where water enters your home. Everything else in the house is downstream of it. When it fails you either lose water entirely or lose pressure everywhere at once, and because the line is buried, the leak can waste an enormous amount of water before anyone sees a symptom.

Age and material tell most of the story. Older Caldwell and Nampa homes often still have galvanized steel service lines that have been corroding for fifty years or more, narrowing from the inside until the pressure is poor and a joint finally splits. Some eras used polybutylene, which fails at fittings. Copper handles our soil well but can suffer pinhole corrosion depending on conditions. Modern replacements use HDPE or PEX rated for burial, which are far more forgiving of ground movement and freeze cycles.

If the line is a decent material in decent shape and it failed at a single point, say something struck it during landscaping, a spot repair is the sensible fix and we will do exactly that.

Replacement is the honest recommendation when the pipe is galvanized and internally rusted, when it has already leaked more than once, when the diameter is too small to give the house the pressure it needs, or when the pipe is buried too shallow to survive our winters. Patching an old service line usually means paying to excavate again in a year or two, which is more expensive than doing it once.

Digging in a yard you have spent years on is nobody's idea of fun, so we take it seriously. Before a shovel moves we get utilities located, because gas, power, irrigation and low voltage lines share that ground. We plan the route to avoid mature trees, patios and driveways when there is a workable alternative, and we keep the trench as narrow as the work allows.

Spoil gets staged on tarps rather than dumped on the lawn. Backfill gets compacted in layers so you do not end up with a trench-shaped depression across the yard next spring. Where the line has to cross under a driveway or sidewalk, we will discuss options, including boring, before anything gets cut. Some restoration, like new sod, concrete or sprinkler repair, may be outside plumbing scope, and we tell you that up front instead of after.

Most residential service line replacements are a one to two day job depending on length, depth, soil and what is in the way. You will be without water for part of that, and we will tell you roughly when so you can plan.
